Seeking to understand attitudes of Ecuador's citizens toward the environment, political scientists Todd Eisenstadt and Karleen West, pursued a three-year journey to find out how and why attitudes vary so greatly, especially among the people of the Amazon. Featuring interviews with some of the world’s most authentic indigenous environmental rights movement leaders, the film offers hope – and caution – to environmentalists everywhere. Through conversations with leaders of three indigenous peoples the scholarship and film warn that environmental movements should be undertaken before environmental degradation, rather than after it, when concern for the environment erodes. People grow concerned instead with the consequences of environmental failure such as public health issues, economic development, and migration.
